A Sunset Swim

WAILEA, Maui, Jan 3 - I spent the rest of the afternoon "foraging for food," as Karen and I jokingly refer to our shopping outings.  By the time I made it back to my condo, the sun was already getting pretty low.  I realized that for all my walking and exploring, I was yet to dip my toe in the ocean.  So I went for a sunset swim...

Along the way, just below my unit, I discovered a banana tree!  It was the first time in my life that I have seen bananas that weren't "grown" by supermarkets.  :-)

Right on the beach, there was this patch of golden and red hibiscus flowers...

The sun was setting as I walked back up the hill to my condo...

It was an apt farewell to a wonderful first day in Maui.  But wait, not so fast...

A Whale of an End to My First Day

Back to my condo, while laying out my towel and swimsuit to dry on the balcony, I saw a big geyser erupt from the ocean some 200 to 300 yards from the beach.  I knew what it was.  Whales.  Probably a male humpback (see the photo).  This is the mating season for them.  That's when they put on quite a show, first for the female, but also for the "viewing public" (for more on that, check out "A Whale of a Trip" from my last year's visit here).  At over 50 tons, these "gentle giants" who would never hurt a human, are much bigger than the killer whales or orcas - like the ones the "viewing public" can see at the San Diego SeaWorld, for example.
